Thoughts for a study of some kind...

Here is a message from Laura about the ideas around a study of some kind. Feel free to post comments to help this discussion get going below or bring your ideas to church on Sunday.

We were wondering if Tuesdays worked for people. It allows the week to get started, and then it won't conflict with Wed. and Thurs. which I believe didn't work for everyone. Time wise, we'll put out 6-7/7:30pm so we can get the little ones to bed on time.

Topic wise, if people have any ideas of what they would want to get out of the Bible or book study, that would help re: to get a discussion going. We could aim for a topic around Christian living or raising a Christian family in today's world. I would have to do some research on what study books are available in that area - and then hopefully there is a book (or more if we are reading through a book) available for purchase. (are people willing to buy a book to read together - that's another thing to ask too!) Also, would people prefer to have one leader, or are people interested in taking turns on a weekly basis?

What do people think?

  1. Joel and I think that Tuesday would work for us and the time should be fine. We don't think that we would be able to commit to a weekly study, a bi-weekly one would work best for us. If others want to do a weekly study, then we would only be able to come every second week.
Topic - Maybe a study on raising kids would be good to look at. Not sure what is out there, but I think the topic is really applicable to all of us right now.
As for leading, we are open to either option. Whatever the group feels would work best will be fine for us.

Thanks for this Laura and Scott!

  2. Andrea and I are up for trying Tuesday's biweekly, weekly would be hard for me, because I would than be out 3 nights in a row every week (because I have youth every Wed & Thurs.). We prefer Sunday's but are willing to give Tuesday's a try. I often have worship practice or meetings at the church on Tuesday's that I'm asked to be at (like these next 3 weeks in a row) so obviously my attendance would very spotty at times. Topic wise Christian living/raising children works too.
If in the end a weeknight doesn't work for our family because of my work, Andrea I would be fine if the group continued to meet during the week and we'd still love to be a part of the occasional social get together on the weekends!
    Have a great day

  3. Sounds good guys. Do you have a preference over a book study vs bible study? Book may be more directed for the topic. I recently bought "Making Children Mind without Losing Yours" by Dr Kevin Leman. If you google the title, click on the second hit for a good overview. Each chapter comes with some review questions. I also don't mind checking the bookstores to see if there are actual book studies for small groups for our topic. Is everyone okay with purchasing a book, if that is what we decide? Happy weekend everyone! :) Laura

  4. Nolan's back to his normal self. Thanks for your prayers. It was very concerning for us since he has never been this sick before, and he had 3 different illnesses within 1.5 weeks. But he's running around as usual - with us running around after him, trying to catch up!

I tend to think Sundays would work best for us, but am open to trying Tues night. 6 might be a little early - but then I agree it would be nice to not have to rush our time in order for the kids to get to bed - so am open to trying 6. I'd prefer to do something around Christian parenting too. Maybe a book study? Do we still want to look at having help with watching the kids? Were we looking at doing this in homes again, or at the church? Jen

  5. Hello, bi-weekly sundays work best for us but we could try bi-weekly Tuesdays. Purchase of a book is no problem...that sounded funny about making kids mind without losing mine!! Big challenge sometimes! Looking forward to getting started. Heather Campbell

  6. I'm looking forward to starting a study!!! I think following a book is a great idea, and have no problem buying a book. I went online to Amazon.com to get some additional ideas for Christian parenting: Parenting the Way God Parents: Refusing to Recycle Your Parents' Mistakes by Katherine Koonce (including be prepared for anger and help your children prepare for it, take an active, prayerful role in seeking God’s vision for your family, and focus on shaping your children’s hearts, not just their behavior), Grace-Based Parenting by Dr. Tim Kimmel (looks at general parenting issues/topics, including discipline), and Raising Kids for True Greatness: Redefine Success for You and Your Child by Dr. Tim Kimmel (helping your child reach her/his full potential). I'm open to other suggestions as well!!

We had talked about arranging for childcare. Is this something we want to still do? I’m sure I would find it helpful. What do others think? I could ask Sherry to put something in the bulletin for volunteers to help out? Hire some youth?

Hope everyone is having a good week!!

    Jen (and Nolan)
